“Unexpected error. Query processing error” in QuickBooks

Firstly, What is happening?

When attempting to start QuickBooks in Microsoft Windows, one of these errors occurs:

  • Unexpected Error: An error has occurred in QuickBooks. Please restart QuickBooks and try again. If you continue to experience this error, please note the C= value and contact technical support. C=342.
  • Unexpected Error: An error has occurred in QuickBooks. C=342. QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close.
  • QBW32: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. DETAILS: QBW32 caused an invalid page fault in module APPCORE.DLL.

Secondly, How to fix the problem

To resolve this issue, first rule out data damage by trying to open a QuickBooks sample company file. If the error still occurs, disable Windows compatibility mode. However

  1. Open a QuickBooks sample company file:
    1. Press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you open QuickBooks.
    2. Release the Ctrl key when the No Company Open window appears. If the error occurs before the No Company Open window appears, proceed to step 2.
    3. Click Open a sample file in the No Company Open window and select any one of the sample files in the list.
      • If the sample company file opens without displaying the error, your company file may be damaged. Refer to “Verifying and rebuilding QuickBooks company data” or restore your company file from a backup.
      • If the error occurs when opening the sample company file, proceed with steps 2 and 3 to disable Windows compatibility mode.
  2. Disable the Windows compatibility mode setting for the QuickBooks desktop shortcut icon:
    1. Right-click the QuickBooks shortcut icon on your Windows desktop and choose Properties.
    2. Click the Compatibility tab.
    3. Clear the checkbox Run this program in compatibility mode for and click OK. If that checkbox is not selected, click Cancel and proceed to step 3.
  3. Disable the Windows compatibility mode setting for the QBW32.EXE file:
    1. Right-click the QuickBooks icon on your Windows desktop and chooseProperties.
    2. Click the Shortcut tab and click Find Target to open the QuickBooks installation folder.
    3. Right-click QBW32.EXE and choose Properties.
    4. Click the Compatibility tab.
    5. Clear the checkbox Run this program in compatibility mode for and click OK. If that checkbox is not selected, click Cancel.
    6. Close the Windows Explorer window and the QuickBooks desktop shortcut properties window.
  4. Open QuickBooks and your company file.
